Why Three Forks?
Headwaters Seat Covers LLC is located in Three Forks, just off I-90 about 30 miles west of Bozeman in southwestern Montana. Three Forks is named after the headwaters of the Missouri River. The Gallatin, Madison, and Jefferson rivers join a few miles north of town and that's where the Missouri begins.
The Three Forks area is rich in history. The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent time in the Three Forks area traveling up each of the three rivers in their pursuit of a water passage across North America. John Colter, the famous mountain man and trapper, had an incident with the local Indians right here in the Three Forks area. Colter was stripped of his clothing and given a head start in a deadly game of cat and mouse that has been called the infamous John Colter Run. Colterout distanced the Indians by hiding in a beaver lodge and later killing the only Indian fit enough to catch up to him. Jeremiah Johnson's incident also happened close to the Three Forks area. As a matter of fact, some of Jeremiah's descendants still live in the area. Both Johnson and Colter have memorial races run each year. Colters race is called the "John Colter Run" and Johnson's memorial race is called the "Liver Eatin' Johnson Run".
Three Forks is nestled in a large valley surrounded by mountains on all four sides. Locals call the Three Forks area the "banana belt" for its moderate temperatures and low precipitation. A 45-minute drive in any direction, accompanied by a half hour walk, will put you into some of the wildest country of Montana. Here the Grizzly Bear is the king of the forest and can be found in most southwestern Montana mountain ranges. Montana is also home to a booming and controversial population of wolves. Black bears and Mountain lions can also be found here. Elk are abundant. Mule deer roam the mountains and white-tailed deer are at home in the valleys. We have blue grouse, spruce grouse, ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partidge, pheasants, wild turkeys and Pacific Flyway waterfowl.
The Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson and parts of the Missouri rivers are all classified as blue-ribbon trout water, meaning some of the best trout fishing in the world can be found right here. And you don't have to drive too far to reach the Big Hole or Yellowstone rivers, two more blue-ribbon trout waters along with high mountain lakes and gin-clear mountain creeks. In addition to trout fisheries, the Missouri River supplies water to several reservoirs in Montana -- Canyon Ferry, Hauser, Holter and eventually 134-mile-long Fort Peck -- on its long path to the North Dakota border which provide additional fantastic fishing opportunities for monster Trout, Walleye, Sauger, Smallmouth bass, Northern pike, Chinook salmon, Paddlefish, and Lake trout to mention just some of the species.
Put it all together and I'm happy to tell you that yes, we do live in an outdoor sportsman's paradise in Three Forks. It's the reason we live here. It's why we like to work here. And with as many opportunities as we have to take our trucks and SUV's into wild country and test them out, we know all the reasons why we have to make our seat covers Montana-tough.
